Miss Bala, from the director Gerardo Naranjo, is one of those films that appear from time to time that capture the imagination of the critics and make us dance by singing Hallelujah. Each time that happens, however, there are one or two critics with another position who have a less enthusiastic reaction. This time it’s my turn to be one of them. It can not be said that Miss Bala is not an entertaining tape, well made and provocative. It is. It also shows an outstanding acting work of its protagonist, Stephanie Sigman and Noe a shocking interpretation of Henández as menacing mobster who gets into the life of the girl. What happens is that I was not amazed and when you come across a film that was praised by many colleagues and you only ’Like’, you wonder for a moment if something bad happens to you.
Laura (Sigman) is an incredibly beautiful young woman in her 20s who lives in Tijuana, Mexico, and who dreams of winning the Miss Baja crown. The day before his audition for Laura and her friend Suzu (Lakshmi Picazo), also aspiring queen contest end up in a sleazy nightclub full of dangerous men and women who love them (inlcuding Suzu).
Victim of ”being in the wrong place at the wrong time” syndrome, Laura ends up being the only living witness a slaughter perpetrated by Lino (Hernandez) -the drug lord local- and his gang. Laura falls into the error of telling her story to an officer and from there things start to go in free fall.
Lino is immediately attracted by Laura (who does not happen to him?) And shamelessly begins to use it in their criminal activities, including spending money across the border to acquire weapons, all in exchange not only for the safety of his father and his brother but for Lino to arrange the beauty contest. It’s like seeing the fastest case of Stockholm syndrome in history.
Laura is shown as a weak and superficial woman and although this is not a problem on its own, it can be frustrating to see such a character repeatedly committing what, to me, are obvious mistakes. But hey, I’ve never been in that situation.
I suppose you could tell me that I had a flaw in my ability to suspend disbelief. This film was filmed expertly and Naranjo does a very good job creating terror and suspense as the story becomes darker and darker for Laura. Unfortunately, on the way she is wrong again and again. Miss Mala is based on the true story of a Miss Sinaloa, Laura Zúñiga, who was arrested in 2008 for being part of an international drug trafficking network.
After all, there is enough suspense, acting quality and truly heartbreaking scenes in Miss Bala, but I felt that I should have liked it a lot more than what I actually liked.
